Fun, hands-on lessons lead to life changing experiences for children! Experience it for yourself on the shores of Lake Tahoe. Fifth and sixth grade classes build healthy habits, academic and social skills, and a connection to community and the natural world. Children and young adults hike or snowshoe in the area learning local ecology during the multi-day overnight camps. The activities meet curriculum standards while also providing a sense of stewardship towards reducing fire danger and keeping Lake Tahoe blue. Great Basin Outdoor School operates exclusively in Nevada and has served thousands of children as a 501(c)(3) non-profit since 1998. Children learn during four-day field studies building academic and social skills and developing their understanding of the natural world. Fifth and sixth grade classes, high school and college students, and teachers study local ecology with standards-based lessons at Camp Galilee, Lake Tahoe during spring, fall, and winter programs. Service-learning projects and place-based education help develop a commitment to sustainability and a connection to the earth.

Urban Roots is founded on the idea that food is a powerful tool for academic and nutrition instruction when it is fully integrated into the classroom. In order to realize our goals of promoting physical, social, and intellectual development in Washoe County Schools, we provide in-school garden and kitchen classrooms, opportunities for teacher involvement, summer programs, host special community and school garden events, and enable afterschool garden clubs.
